Related posts really help on bounce rate problems. Main highlight is we can show related posts based on the search term for search engine traffic.

In sidebar, you can show recent posts, popular posts etc in sidebars. Generally readers are expecting related posts in below post only. So that anyone not created a plugin to show related posts with thumbnail in sidebar.

I have found one widget. It looks like what you asked. But i haven’t tried that.
The plugin says it supports thumbnail images if you use wordpress 2.9’s version.
